Whitney Houston Dead, by Associated Press

12 Feb

Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music’s queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died. She was 48.

Publicist Kristen Foster told the Associated Press Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unknown.

At her peak, Houston the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world’s best-selling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like “The Bodyguard” and “Waiting to Exhale.”

She had the he perfect voice, and the perfect image: a gorgeous singer who had sex appeal but was never overtly sexual, who maintained perfect poise.

She influenced a generation of younger singers, from

Rural residents strike back at Lucas film empire

Marin County’s planning commission will hear arguments for and against allowing filmmaker George Lucas to expand his movie-making empire in the quiet hills just north of San Francisco.

Some Marin County residents are balking at the planned 270,000-square-foot digital media production compound on historic farmland known as Grady Ranch. They worry the facility will constrain their lifestyle with additional noise, traffic and harmful environmental impacts on the pristine countryside.

But Lucasfilms officials insist the compound will be similar to the Skywalker Ranch, a sound facility hidden in hills for 32 years without complaint. They will hide the new digital filmmaking structure in the hills and work to mitigate traffic while protecting hundreds of acres from further development.

Both sides will face off at the planning commission on Feb.

Michael Rapaport picks favorite music docs

By CHRISTY LEMIRE

Michael Rapaport clearly loves music. It’s evident in every moment of his documentary, “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest,” the actor’s directing debut about the influential hip-hop group. The film includes the rift that divided the Tribe as well as the tensions that linger today, but a deep admiration for the music itself shines through.

So with the Grammy Awards on Sunday, where “Beats, Rhymes & Life” is nominated for best long form music video, we asked Rapaport to take over the Five Most space to pick his favorite music documentaries. (The film, which came out theatrically last summer, also won top documentary honors from the Producers Guild of America this year.) But since he’s so enthusiastic _ and was so nice to join us this week _ we let him pick six, in order of preference and in his own words:

Simon Cowell Sounds Off on X Factor Shakeup

Simon Cowell

A week after judges Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul and host Steve Jones were fired from The X Factor , executive producer and judge Simon Cowell is addressing the sudden shakeup.

Why The X Factor bloodbath is good news — and hopefully just a starting point

“It was fairly straight what wanted, and we were told it had to happen straight away,” Cowell said in an interview with Extra Tuesday regarding Fox’s decision to get rid of the three regulars. He added that he wanted to keep Adbul, who was gracious upon receiving the bad news. “She understand it’s business, it’s never personal,” he said.

“Paula was an interesting call,” Fox’s President of Alternative Entertainment Mike Darnell told Entertainment Weekly in a separate interview also posted Tuesday. “She and Simon are great friends, so it was just a dynamic conversation about what’s the nature of the group going to be. And I think we decided to pull the Band-Aid off as quickly as

Testimony ends in trial over Globes broadcast deal

By ANTHONY McCARTNEY

Testimony concluded Tuesday in a trial that will decide whether the Golden Globe Awards remain on NBC through 2018 with a federal judge strongly urging both sides to settle before a ruling is necessary.

U.S. District Judge A. Howard Matz warned attorneys for the Globes’ organizers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and its longtime producers that he would declare a clear winner, which could result in the Globes being tangled up on appeal for another awards season.

The case involves a $ 150 million deal that dick clark productions, also known as dcp, negotiated with NBC in 2010. The glitzy awards gala has aired on the network since 1996, but the HFPA contends the company had no right to enter the deal or to continue working on the show without its authorization.

Attorneys for dcp, which is no longer owned by entertainment pioneer Dick Clark, argue a nearly

NBC picked a good year to host the Super Bowl. Based on the fast national data, this year’s game was the highest-rated broadcast in 26 years. It also tops the list of most-watched programs in U.S. history, edging out CBS’ broadcast of the big game last year.

If ever there was an opportunity this year to promote new series, The Voice and Smash got it last night. NBC wasn’t shy about reminding viewers to tune in to last night’s Voice Season 2 premiere following the game, and to watch tonight’s series premiere of Smash. The ratings may still be pending for Smash, but from what NBC shared about last night’s Super Bowl broadcast, a whopping 111.3 million viewers tuned in to watch the Giants beat the Patriots. Or rather, they tuned in to see the game and ended up seeing the Giants win the Super Bowl.

The Giants’ margin to win was about as close as NBC’s viewer margin by comparison to last year’s numbers. 111.0 million
